Kaihewalu Lua Weapons Exhibit at the Martial Arts History Museum in Burbank, California

The Weapons of the Kaihewalu Lua

Mea Kaua (The Weapons of War)

The only Kaihewalu Lua Weapons Exhibit at the Martial Arts History Museum in Glendale, California. Each weapon displayed was made by 'Olohe Solomon Kaihewalu. In 2024, mea kaua made by Kumu Lua Burns and Kumu Lua Shaner was added to this exhibit.

Weapons used by the Hawaiian Warriors were mostly utilitarian at first. The weapons of the 'Olohe Kaihewalu:

  

Hoe – Paddle

Iwi – 6-8-inch double pointed hand dagger

Ko’oko'o – Long bo/staff, cane

Ko’oko’o Pokole – Short bo/staff

Ku’eku’e – Knuckle duster with shark teeth

Lei-o-Mano – Club with shark teeth

Ma’a – Slingshot

Maka Pahoa – Double-edged dagger

Maka Pahoa Ko’oko’o – Double-edged dagger at end of short bo/staff

Newa – Club

Pahoa – Single-edged dagger

Palua ‘o Newa – Double clubs/sticks
